Black Lacquered Coffee Tables

Expose most untreated woods to moisture and the devastating effects of wood rotting fungi can be seen quite quickly. As the moisture content rises in the wood, the fungi multiply and spread, undermining its structure and integrity.

Not so with Teak.

Other woods like Oak and Pine must be treated, regularly if they are to survive outside. This treatment process may well be time consuming and expensive and may result in a different finish to that which was originally intended. Teak does not require such finishes; it is perfectly at home outside in its untreated, natural state.

Another advantage of Teak is that it does not scratch or dent easily. If you were to dent a Teak furniture piece, quite apart from ruining it, you would simply add to its character. The longevity of Teak furniture means that it can be passed down through the generations, picking up scratches and dents as it goes and still look as good as it did originally.

Contrast this with Pine, for example, a wide grained soft wood, very prone to splitting and totally incapable of surviving outside without costly and time consuming treatments. Oak, on the other hand, is close grained making it better able to cope but still prone to wood rot since it has large, open capillaries, which the fungi love.

Another popular wood among furniture makers is Mahogany but this has been placed on the endangered species list, as it is now a very rare commodity. Indeed the making of anything from new mahogany is not recommended and frowned upon.

Teak trees can grow to 40m high and can live for around 100 years if not felled before. Most teak is harvested when the tree is around forty years old, since this provides good quality wood in the centre of the log, which is the oldest part. The older the wood, the better, since the grain is closer and the fibres are stronger. This makes it more durable - and justly more expensive. Furniture made out of old, high quality teak will last for a very long time.

At Puji we use reclaimed teak, which is made from old-growth wood, often more than 40 years old. In Indonesia, old Colonial buildings are being deconstructed in favour of modern-style designs. We reclaim the teak from the old buildings and reuse it to make a selection of solid wood furniture. Reclaimed teak has been well seasoned and aired for over 100 years in many cases. This means that the wood is unlikely to warp or crack, and it adds to the durability of the timber. Reclaimed teak has a beautiful rustic weathered look that adds a depth of history and character to a piece of furniture for your home.

Environmentalists these days are against furniture made of newly cut wood since it can lead to deforestation and be harmful to a country. Using reclaimed timber is a very eco-conscious choice, as it reuses old materials, giving them new life.

What makes teak particularly special over other timbers is that it has natural preserving oils in the wood that prevent rot and insect attack. It can survive in the outdoors without any finish and it gets better with age outside, developing a beautiful silvery sheen. Anyone that values the natural look and texture of unfinished wood will greatly appreciate teak's durability in its unfinished state and should use it to its best advantage.

Choosing the right mattress can mean the difference between years of heavenly, refreshing sleep or countless nights of tossing and turning. At Puji Furniture we offer three types of mattresses: pocket sprung mattresses, orthopaedic mattresses, and contour mattresses. Choose the one that suits you best.

You may be wondering what difference it makes to have an 800 pocket sprung mattress compared to a 1400 pocket sprung mattress. The number indicates how many coils there are in the mattress. Coil sprung mattresses will only have about 300-400 coils, but pocket sprung mattresses require more coils. The higher the number, the firmer the mattress.

Three factors should be taken into consideration when deciding on the right mattress for you.

Firstly, (honestly!) consider your weight. Bigger boned people should choose firmer mattresses since they require more support. There are more coils per square metre in a firmer mattress. Our 1500 luxury pocket sprung mattress should be the one for you.

Secondly, do you feel more comfortable sleeping on something firm and hard or a mattress with a little more give? This comes down to personal preference, but bear in mind that a softer mattress with fewer coils could be less comfortable for you in the long run.

Finally, do you sleep on your side? If so, firmer mattresses are not for you. You need a little more give so that the position of your shoulder is comfortable. Choose the 800 pocket sprung mattress. If you sleep on your back or your front, choose a firmer mattress for even support.

So as to make a fully informed decision, it is also important to know what's inside your chosen mattress. Open coil mattresses are the standard construction method for mattresses. These are mattresses with three-inch diameter steel coils interconnected in a framework inside the mattress. They are then enclosed in a metal rod framework, and enveloped in padding. Firmer, more durable versions of open coil mattresses are called orthopaedic mattresses. We offer standard, deluxe and luxury orthopaedic mattresses. The difference between them is that the coils in the standard mattress are slightly thinner than the other two, providing lighter support. The luxury mattress is similar to the 1200 pocket sprung mattress - our most popular choice.

Whichever style of bed frame you choose the most important thing to consider is the quality. You want to make sure that it has a sturdy structure, which can support your mattress and weight. Always take time to look at how the bed is constructed; does it have a sprung central rail? Are the slats held in place and how far apart are they spaced? If you have invested in a good quality pocket sprung or latex mattress you need to have slats no more than 2" apart to support your mattress throughout.

Linens are an important part of interior decorating. From sheets to pillowcases to duvets, the linen you choose for the bed can make or break your bedroom. But how do you choose? There are so many different types available that it can become very hard to decide - Why invest in organic bedding? Does thread count really count? And what's in a weave?

When shopping for bed linens there are a number of different characteristics to consider. Fabrics, patterns, quality and design will all influence your choice, as well as the existing design in your bedroom. Choose colours and patterns that feel good to the touch, and complement your bedroom style.

Before You Buy

The first thing to consider before you buy is to decide on the material and how easy it is to care for. Most sheets are made of pure cotton or a cotton and polyester mix. Cotton is durable and easy to care for, as well as being a natural breathable fibre, which makes it so ideal for sheets. More expensive brands of sheets are made with Egyptian cotton and have a high thread count. Thread count denotes the number of threads per square inch and gives a good indicator of the quality of the linen. The higher the thread count the softer and more lustrous the fabric, it's also more durable and less prone to shrinkage. Any bed linen above 200-thread count will offer a more luxurious fabric quality.

Organic bedding can be a wonderful option for the bedroom and most benefit from a 250-thread count making them feel lovely and soft. There are no traces of the processing chemicals that remain on conventionally grown cotton, which can irritate delicate skin. Bedding Weaves

The weave of your bedding describes the way the individual yarns were woven or twisted together when the fabric was produced.

● Percale cotton- usually has a thread count of 200 or over with a tight weave. Percale fabric is firm and smooth with no gloss. It's easy to care for, requiring little or no ironing.

●Voile- a crisp, lightweight, cotton-like fabric, made with high-twist yarns has a similar appearance to organza.

●Oxford Weave- made from yarns that have been doubled and woven into a particular pattern.

●Flannel-is brushed after weaving to give a soft, fluffy surface texture. This makes it lightweight but warm and ideal for winter use.

Creating a Calming Retreat

If you want your bedroom to feel like a relaxing retreat its best to choose calm neutrals and soft shades. Soft tones can create a peaceful sanctuary, and layering fabrics is an easy way to liven up your bed. Mixing different textures and levels of colour will create a stylish look.

Nothing is more romantic than spending an evening in front of an open fire, especially now that winter is here and the nights are cold and dark.
