What is black lacquer furniture?

Black lacquer furniture is oriental style furniture characterised by a smooth, shiny and glossy surface. It has a timeless beauty and elegance and its gleaming surface is created by meticulously sealing the wood with layer upon layer of high gloss varnish. The result is very robust furniture with a surface which is highly resistant to water, acid and abrasion. How is black lacquer furniture made?

Black lacquer furniture has been admired for generations. It involves a meticulous multi-layering finishing process that has been refined and perfected over centuries. The varnish resin comes from the sap of the Rhus Vernicifera tree, also known as the varnish tree, which is native to China. After the initial base coat, several thin layers of natural lacquer are applied evenly in a careful and complicated process. In some cases the lacquer is inlaid with ivory, jade or mother of pearl and elaborate details are hand-painted on before a final coat of varnish is applied. Only highly skilled craftsman can produce a perfect lacquered finish. The result is an extremely robust surface and truly outstanding furniture piece which will provide a lifetime of enjoyment.

Black lacquer furniture is a key element in Chinese interiors and has a history that dates back thousands of years. Archaeological digs in China have revealed some evidence that it has been used for more than 8000 years. Although the lacquering process has been used by the Japanese since ancient times, the careful and meticulous application process was developed by the Chinese.
