Canopy Beds
What Are Canopy Beds?
Canopy beds are commonly referred to as four-poster beds. A canopy bed is a fairly loose term applied to any bed frame, which can be covered by a suspended cloth canopy. These days, their distinctive style evokes feelings of grandeur and superiority, one of the main reasons why in hotels and guesthouses canopy beds are reserved for the very best rooms and suites.
This style of bed is available across the full range of bed sizes but are most popular in both king and queen size. Canopy beds can be produced as singles or twins and can be made from a range of materials including wrought iron, steel and even resin but most commonly they are produced using hardwoods such as Oak, Cherry, Mahogany or Teak.
Canopy beds come in a huge range of styles from medieval gothic, to the romantic style and on to the simple straight-line designs, favoured in the contemporary home. Specially built canopy beds however, from whichever era, will have at least one thing in common, a "canopy frame" from which the fabric will drape. Four posts usually support the canopy frame; hence the canopy bed's other name, the four-poster.
Quite often the canopy and the bed are sold separately, allowing you the choice of canopy style and fabric. The choice of canopy frame ranges from one that fully encloses the bed to a smaller, centrally positioned circular frame and even a smaller one designed just to protect your head as you sleep.

The Canopy Bed - a Brief History
Canopies were originally placed over beds as a means of protecting the sleeper from the unwelcome intrusion of flying insects, dust or soot. These practical applications for canopy beds necessitated the use of thicker, more durable materials with little or no regard paid to their aesthetics. Over time the canopy was developed to become curtains, providing greater privacy, something much prized amongst the rich and poor alike.
The passing of time saw canopy beds become more widely associated with wealth and luxury. This lead to the use of finer materials like silks and velvets and these were often lavishly decorated with embroidery or appliqué. Some fabrics contained gold, silver or precious stones, others had elaborate scenes or wildlife embroidered into the cloth such as hunting scenes or pictures of birds or animals.
A version of the canopy bed can be traced least as far back to the 13th century when the canopy was hung by chords from the beams above. However, the four poster bed which is so widely recognised today was introduced into Britain the 15th century and was thought to have come from Austria. Some of these were vast and filled half a bed chamber although this would have been more unusual.
