Contemporary Beds
A Guide to Our Contemporary Bed Styles
At Puji we have a wide selection of contemporary beds to suit all styles of interior. Whether it's oriental beds, canopy beds, platform, four poster or sleigh beds, we have a wonderful collection to choose from.
All our solid wood furniture is designed and created to add beauty and style to your home. Our beds are hand made using traditional mortise and tenon joints and are designed to be strong and durable. We use recycled timber wherever possible as well as a variety of high quality hardwoods such as Mango, Mahogany, Walnut Oak and Teak.
Platform Beds
The easiest way to describe a platform bed is that it is a platform, either wooden or metal, on which a mattress rests. A platform bed is usually quite low to the ground as there is no need for a box spring or a mattress foundation. However, they are sometimes raised on legs so drawers can be fitted in the base for that much needed extra bedroom storage.
Platform beds are made of a hard platform so support a mattress without a box spring or a mattress foundation. They look stylish with simple clean designs, which work well with an oriental bedroom design or a modern contemporary theme.
Platform beds provide an aesthetical benefit, as they are lower to the ground, which makes the room appear larger.

Canopy Beds/Four Poster Beds
The most common name for the canopy bed is the four-poster bed. The term canopy can encompass any bed frame, which is covered by an overhanging cloth. Their dominance and elitist style induce a feeling of supremacy and grandeur, which is the premier reason why they are used for the very best rooms and suites in hotels and guesthouses.
Although four poster, or canopy beds come in the full range of bed sizes, including singles and twins, they are most popular in the queen and king sizes. Canopy beds are made from a variety of materials including steel, wrought iron and even resin. But they are most commonly constructed from hardwoods such as Oak, Cherry, Teak and Mahogany.

Black Lacquered Beds
Black lacquer bedroom furniture can be defined as ageless, stylish and sophisticated and is a wonderful additional to a minimalist home. Inspired by traditional Chinese furniture, they are constructed from solid hardwoods, which are lacquered seven times to create a glossy, Eastern finish. A black lacquered bed will help create a chic and refined oriental style to your bedroom.

Sleigh Beds
While the sleigh bed design dates back to the Roman Empire, the current type of sleigh bed works well in any modern home. Remains of these furniture fittings were found during Roman excavations in France in the early 19th century. The Emperor Napoleon admired the design so much he asked for the beds to be made for his palatial homes. As a result the sleigh bed became known as French beds.
Early sleigh beds, or French beds were made for individuals to relax during the day and were not normally for sleeping on. Sleigh beds were a focal point in a chamber from which the occupant would hold court.
As the bed was the centre piece it could be looked at from all sides and this gave carpenters the ability to carve their own elaborate designs and ornate signature marks into the wood.
