Contemporary furniture and top tips for creating a contemporary look

Contemporary furniture is defined as furniture that has been designed and made recently, and fits with the current trends. Contemporary styles are still being created, and are ever-evolving. In a few decades, what we call contemporary furniture now will become vintage furniture.

The current trends for the contemporary look include smooth straight edges and bold, sleek shapes. Contemporary furniture often has simple square corners. Contemporary interiors are associated with uncluttered, open spaces resulting in a clean feel to the space.

Enlisting help of an interior designer when decorating your home will result in a completely unique contemporary interior, with each furniture piece designed to your specific tastes and needs should you so wish. The result will be absolutely perfect for you and bang up to date with contemporary styling.

At Puji we specialize in contemporary furniture. We offer key furniture pieces, coordinating accessories, and an experienced bespoke design service.

Here are our Top 10 tips of how to create a contemporary look in your home:

1. Coordinate

Coordinate your accessories, matching them to your furniture pieces. This will achieve a sense of harmony. Mismatched furniture creates an unsettled atmosphere. Choose furniture from the same range, which will match effortlessly, and contrast this with accessories. Bright or light coloured throws, over dark furniture work fabulously. Try the dark Arc bed with one of our luxurious natural throws.

2. Create Space

To create a contemporary interior, leave plenty of space for movement. Do not crowd the room; choose a few key pieces, keeping the space open and airy. The room will seem larger.

3. De-Clutter

You may love all your knick-knacks, but they just don't fit with a contemporary styled room. You have three options.

a) Chuck them.
b) Hide them away in a cupboard.
c) Display them within a limited space. The straight lines of a bookshelf will frame the display items and will reduce the cluttered appearance. A good option for this is the Cubic Bookshelf. But you should really choose option a) for the ultimate contemporary look!

Make sure that every object in your house has a home by ensuring you have enough storage space. Too-small storage units with bulging drawers that can't close properly are a big no-no. The Texture Low Sideboard is a very big, very contemporary furniture storage solution.

4. Choose long lasting furniture

A broken table will do nothing for a contemporary interior. Durable furniture will last longer than fragile pieces, especially if you have children! Choose furniture made with hardwearing materials with quality construction. At Puji we always deliver high quality.

5. Use natural fibres

Natural fibres promote calm in contemporary spaces, and also balance the room against any electrical goods you may have. Computers, TVs and sound systems may give your living area or bedroom an artificial feel. Bring it back down to earth with some greenery or wooden furniture. Puji furniture uses reclaimed teak, a sustainable source of this incredibly durable and beautiful hardwood.

6. Use patterns

Patterns are very vogue on upholstery and on the walls at the moment, with floral patterns being particularly popular. Keep colour to a minimum for an ultra-modern feel. You could decorate one wall or panel with patterned wallpaper, and choose one colour from the pattern in which to paint the other walls. Make sure you get the exact shade - some paint suppliers can mix the paint for you. If you come across a fabric you particularly like, we can upholster seating in your chosen fabric with our bespoke service.

7. Use colour schemes

It's a common misconception that contemporary interiors should be pale in colour. Style has moved on. Plain beige is so last year. Black and white with bright accessories is the trend right now. You could choose white walls with some dark furniture, for example the Klasik Coffee Table, and hang the colourful Mosaic Eclipse Mirror on the wall.

8. Arrange furniture around wall hangings

Frame large feature wall decorations with furniture. Frame the corner of a large canvas with the seat of a chair, or juxtapose a sideboard with a bookcase to frame a mirror. Don't overcrowd the wall decoration - remember to keep simple, uncluttered lines. This can be difficult to achieve without the help of an interiors specialist, so we recommend using our bespoke service. If you're looking for that special wall decoration, we offer a beautiful selection of mirrors and also original Indonesian handmade art.

9. Use photo frames

Use contemporary frames for your photos, but not too many! Lots of photo frames everywhere clutter the space and attract dust. The Puji Photo Tower is a stylish, uncluttered way of displaying your favourite family moments. Photos of happy times in the home are very useful in promoting further happy moments.

10. Match your new furniture to your existing furniture

If you already have one or two furniture pieces that you love and would like to base the décor of the room around, but you can't find suitable matching furniture, hiring a designer is the way to go. They can design complementary furniture pieces just for you.
