Contemporary rugs provide the finishing touches to your home or office. They add colour, patterns and textures and help to define the mood of the room. Rugs help to soften hard lines and add warmth and comfort to your home. They are ideal for taking the chill off solid wood or tiled floors, particularly in the bedroom or living room. The addition of carefully placed rugs can also help minimise or hide imperfections in flooring, such as stains, chips or holes. They also reduce the wear on the floor, which is useful in heavy traffic areas. In a home with mostly wooden floors, a good selection of rugs will reduce the appearance of dust, and absorb and reduce noise.
Rug Types
There is an endless choice of rugs available in a wonderful array of colours and patterns. They are often named after the region from which they originated – e.g. Persian, Oriental, Southwestern rugs. Other times rugs are named for a certain characteristic or specific use – e.g. contemporary rugs, shag rugs, novelty rugs, accent rugs, hall runners, children’s rugs, custom made rugs and indoor-outdoor rugs.
Shag Rugs
These were popular in the 1970’s and are currently making a come back. The soft, thick rug fibres create a warm, luxurious feel in the home, and help to absorb noise. Shag rugs come in a range of colours and are ideal for use in the bedroom and living room.
Contemporary Rugs
These are often made using bright colours and strong patterns or shapes. Contemporary rugs can be used to create a statement in your room, or blend with other design pieces.
Oriental Rugs
Oriental rugs were originally made in China. They are today made in a number of countries including India and Iran, and will add a sense of timeless luxury to a room. The cost of a rug depends on the material it is made from (silk is more expensive than wool) and the knottage.
Choosing a Rug
Choosing a rug in terms of the colours and patterns in its design will depend on the area of your home you will use it in. We sell a beautiful selection of colours and shapes to complement and contrast with a wide range of colour schemes.
The other important factor when choosing a rug is to consider what material it is made from. Natural material choices include: animal or plant fibres such as wool, cotton, sisal, jute, seagrass or bamboo. There are also various synthetic fibres used including viscose, rayon, nylon, acrylic or polypropylene/olefin.
Your choice of material will influence how the rug feels, and how long it lasts.
Wool rugs and wonderfully soft and provide comfort and elegance in the room they are used. Wool comes from sheep, goats, llamas and alpacas, and is an incredibly resilient material. It dyes well and is naturally fire and dust mite resistant. Wool rugs are the most popular choice, and give their owners bags of style as well as good value for money.
Acrylic is a synthetic material that can be blended with other fibres to produce a rug that has the look of a wool rug, but at a lower cost. Silk is a natural fiber that may be used on its own or included in higher quality rugs, such as Persian and Oriental rugs. The silk is added for its luster and shine.
Silk is the most expensive rug fiber and even a little bit of silk added as an accent can raise the price of the rug. Silk rugs should be handled with care and should only be cleaned by a professional rug cleaner.
Rugs made from polypropylene fibres are at the lower end of the cost scale, making them more affordable than other types of rugs. They are lightweight and therefore are not good for areas where there is lots of traffic.
Some of the most popular rugs are blends, where two (or more) types of rug material are combined to make a rug that has the characteristics of one material enhanced with those of another. It might be a wool rug with silk highlights, a wool and cotton blend or a mix of natural and synthetic materials. The result can be a rug that has a more desired look or feel, along with more durability and/or value.
