Rattan, a relative of the tropical palm tree is extremely strong and durable. It grows upwards like a tree and then bends back to the ground and snakes through the rain forest like a vine. After a few years growth the rattan vines are then harvested and cut into 12 to 18 foot sections and hauled away for drying. Once the rattan has been dried it will retain its shape forever.

70% of the world's rattan population exists in Indonesia. In the forests where the rattan grows, its economic value can help protect forest land, by providing an alternative to loggers who can harvest the rattan instead of logging trees.

Rattan is used to hand make and weave functional rattan baskets that can be used for a variety of purposes. In Indonesia they are made and used for food storage, food gathering and general household storage. Hand woven rattan baskets are found in all of the Indonesian villages where they often hang from the rafters or walls of the houses.
