Whatever the type of dining room table you prefer, the table must fit proportionally within the room to allow ease of movement. One of the most common types of dining room table is the rectangular one because most dining rooms are this shape. They can also seat a larger number of people and some have an extra leaf so they can be extended to seat more guests.
A rectangular dining table is a very traditional table shape used for many formal occasions because it has a very clearly defined 'head' of table. It is probably the best table to use in a rectangular room and allows for a dramatic lighting above, which can form the focal point of the dining room.
Rectangular tables are the preferred option because they can seat a larger number of guests. There should be ease of access to the table and it should not completely take over the room. If you have a very narrow table, it is advisable to place serving dishes and trays on a side table. This is so the dining table does not become cluttered and you have more time to entertain your guests as you don't have to keep getting up to go to the kitchen all the time.
