Sleigh Beds
Sleigh beds are a popular style of bed design that resemble the look of a sleigh. Made from teak, oak and other hardwoods, sleigh beds are popular today in modern and traditional style homes.
Historically, this style of bed dates back to the Roman Empire. Remains of these furniture pieces were discovered during Roman excavations in France in the early 19th century. History has it that Emperor Napoleon took to the design instantly, commissioning works for his palatial homes and this lead to them becoming known as French beds.
The early sleigh beds or French beds were designed for a single person's repose during the day and were not normally slept on. They would be placed as the centrepiece in a chamber, from which the occupant would hold court.
The positioning of the bed meant it could be seen and admired from all sides and this gave manufacturers licence to carve their own, ornate designs and lavish signature marks into the scrolling wood.
The modern sleigh bed is very reminiscent of its early French predecessor, retaining many of the design features associated with the period. Long, sweeping curves and feature scrolling combine, in some cases with ornate carvings to replicate the grandeur of the time.
The main feature of a sleigh bed is the distinctive height differential, between the head and footboards.
When looked on sideways, the design is reminiscent of an old-fashioned horse drawn sleigh. The traditional sleigh bed would even have wooden bars or slats running down each side giving the imaginary rider, something to hold on to whilst travelling.
Sleigh beds can be made using a wide range of materials including iron, steel and aluminum but they are most commonly constructed of hardwoods like Cherry, Mahogany, Oak and Teak. Left in their natural state, varnished or painted they make gorgeous statement pieces that you will enjoy for many years to come.
