Choosing the right bedroom furniture is much more of a significant purchase than you imagine. You spend an average of eight hours a night sleeping and as you do so your mind remains constantly active. Your environment, particularly in the bedroom, can affect your thoughts and determine whether you have a calm and peaceful sleep or a restless night. Choosing Your Solid Wood Bed

When choosing a bed frame you should never compromise on quality. Consider whether the bed is sturdy enough to support you and your mattress. Take a look at how the bed is built. Has it a sprung central rail? Look at the slats. Are they held in place and how far apart are they spaced? It is always worth considering buying a high quality mattress. If you have a good pocket sprung or latex mattress the slats need to be no more than two inches apart.

There are several important things to consider when buying a bed frame. The first step should be to measure your bedroom to calculate the right bed size. Leave a gap of least 15 inches on either side so you can get in and out easily. If you share your bed think about how much you or your partner moves around when you are asleep so you can get the most comfortable size.  In the UK beds come in four key sizes which are super king, king, double and single. Bear in mind the height of the bed too and that this will change once the mattress is in place. Your bed needs to be the right height to get on and off comfortably.

After your bed, the next single important purchase you will make for your bedroom will be the wardrobe. But how can you find the right wardrobe for your needs? Here are some of the things you should bear in mind:

  • How much wardrobe space do you need for all of your clothes?
  • Do you need lots of shorter hanging spaces for shirts and suits or longer hanging space for coats and dresses?
  • Would a fitted wardrobe or a freestanding wardrobe suit your needs better?
  • Which type of wood do you like best?

Appearance is a priority when choosing a wardrobe. You should always think about buying the best quality you can. Flat packed wardrobes are never as hard-wearing as those which are hand-made or factory assembled. If you want to make the best use of space, it is worthwhile considering made-to-measure.

A man's wardrobe has about 50 -70 percent hanging space with one or more extra drawers at the base. These are sometimes called combination wardrobes and the extra drawers are perfect for storing spare bedding or jumpers.

Wardrobes that are full hanging consist of a rail that provides enough space to hang long dresses or skirts. They also have space to store bags, shoes and luggage at the bottom.

Freestanding wardrobes give a bedroom a more relaxed feel and help put your own personal stamp on a room. They suit a variety of budgets and have the added benefit of being portable, so they can be taken with you when you move house. Although freestanding wardrobes are made to fit in an average alcove, you are advised to take measurements before you buy to make sure you get just the right size for your bedroom. Fitted wardrobes give you that extra space, but can make your bedroom look more formal.
